#1953 closed defect (bug) (no action required)

Cannot navigate to main blog?

Description

When showing activity on the home page, the activity button disappears (good) but is not replaced by the blog button in the main navigation (bad?). It means that people are not able to browse the blog...

Not sure if this is a defect or if I'm missing some rationale here, but thought the old way was quite clever. Should (could) the alteration of the activity/blog buttons be brought back?

Make a page for your blog posts - call it "Blog" or "Posts" or "News" or whatever you want. Under Settings > Reading set this page as your posts page.

Thanks for the reply Andy.

The point I was trying to make is that when you do this and then switch your reading settings to back 'activity', the blog page disappears and becomes inaccessible.

Thought it was a shame you cannot have both activity and blog represented in the navigation anymore and assign one of them as the home content, without disabling the other.

Navigation states:
Home (latest posts/blog page), Activity, Members, etc.

Or:
Home (activity stream), Blog, Members, etc.

I hope this makes sense?

F.

You can, you can set a WordPress page as the home screen, and another page for the posts screen. That way you will have a static page for the home tab, an activity tab, and a blog/posts tab.

Thanks for the explanation.

I can see how the acitivyty toggles with the single page, it's good!

However, I'm still not seeing (or understanding) the functionality where I can display activity on the front page while having another tab where I can see the latest posts.

Might have a coffee to help me see. Thanks for the good work!

Dark espresso, found it.

This does not seem to work with the default About page generated by WPMU:

  • Front page: Activity Stream
  • Posts page: About

When creating a new blank page named Blog it works when:

  • Front page: Activity Stream
  • Posts page: Blog

Not sure why this is, nor why I can't select a single post (not a page) in the post page setting.

Should the select post page contain a latest posts option?

Should the select post page contain a latest posts option?

Read: Front page displays -> A static page -> Posts page -> Your latest posts

It might be good...

  • Cc floris removed
  • Keywords front page added

Found this breaks the navigation with setting:

  • Front page displays -> A static page -> Front page -> Blog
  • Front page displays -> A static page -> Posts page -> None

Recent posts are displayed on the front page through 'Blog', which is good. However, all tabs are visible by default (including a duplicate 'Blog' at the end) with none of them selected when arriving on home (or when clicking home).

Are you sure there's no bug here?

Sorry the above should read:

  • Front page displays -> A static page -> Front page -> None
  • Front page displays -> A static page -> Posts page -> Blog

Replying to floris:

Should the select post page contain a latest posts option?

Read: Front page displays -> A static page -> Posts page -> Your latest posts

It might be good...

Please disregard.

With the introduction of WP menus in the bp-default theme for BP 1.3, you can organize how the navigation is displayed quite easily.
