I've just done a complete clean reinstall; all of buddypress and the themes, and I get the following error when using bp-default and either bp-sn-framework or bp-sn-parent.

Also, on the manage themes page, the default theme is listed as having its template files in /themes/bp-sn-parent/groups.

Problem solved. BuddyPress wasn't activated. Excuse my stupidity....
